Mantra meditation is a type of meditation where a word or phrase is repeated. Meditation helps to still the mind and bring us a bit of inner peace, perfect for the hectic times we can be going through, but ideal on a daily basis. When meditating, you may notice your breathing starts to become more steady, your heartbeat starts to slow down and a feeling of calmness and relaxation is washed over you.
The mala beads at The Mala Den are made from 108 beads which is the traditional count for mantra meditation, but this doesn’t mean that you have to do that many! You may only have a few minutes to spare and so even 10 or 20 counts is just fine!
First you need to choose a word, phrase or positive intention that you would like to use. It could be as short and sweet as “Om shanti” which means peace, or longer such as “I am calm, I am strong” which is a nice one to use when feeling anxious.
Next choose whether you want to say your mantra out loud, sing it or recite it quietly in your mind. What feels right for you today? If you don’t yet have any mala beads, you can still enjoy mantra meditation in the same way, just without holding the beads. Some people find mantra meditation easier when they use mala beads as they have the added benefit of touch. Your fingers touch each bead as the mantra is repeated, this helps to keep your mind gently focused and the mala beads help to keep count of how many times you have recited it. Most of the mala beads have been made using gemstones at The Mala Den and this gives the added benefit of the healing energy from the crystal being a part of your meditation. Some crystals are used to bring about calmness, some for a boost of strength or confidence. Is there a gemstone that you are drawn to at the moment?
Remember if your mind wanders, this is completely normal and trust me it probably will happen! Just gently bring your awareness back to reciting your next mantra.
Enjoy your time in mantra meditation, journey within…
Namaste
